What is personal injury?

“Personal injury” is a legal term that encompasses the full range of damages that a person can experience when he or she is harmed by another party’s negligence or wrongdoing. Personal injury includes both direct injury to the individual’s body and the emotional injury and financial losses that may occur at the same time.

For example, in a car accident, someone might be injured by a negligent driver. The injured party may have a personal injury case. When seeking compensation, the individual’s direct injuries and medical bills are included, but so are losses such as property damage to the vehicle, lost wages due to time away from work, and pain and suffering. In cases where the injury was very severe, the effects of an injury can last for years or decades, requiring higher compensation to address the full scope of the damages.
