What are the warning signs of nursing home abuse or neglect?

Nursing home abuse and neglect can manifest itself in a number of physical and psychological symptoms. By watching for symptoms that are not consistent with a resident’s physical and mental health issues, his or her family can remain alert to signs of abuse or neglect.

Families should watch out for symptoms that suggest the resident is not receiving proper care, like dehydration, malnutrition, bed sores, falls, frequent illnesses and infection. Unexplained death may occur in severe cases.

Physical signs of abuse by staff or other residents include asphyxiation in bed, unexplained wounds or bruises and injuries to the pelvic area.

The resident may exhibit sudden behavioral or emotional changes. Families may notice their loved one becoming withdrawn or reluctant to speak in front of staff members. The resident may wander or leave the premises. or he or she may adopt behaviors like rocking or biting.
