Do people have a duty to report nursing home abuse or neglect?

Yes, many professionals are required by Florida law to report elder abuse or neglect, whether it takes place in a nursing home or elsewhere.

People who must report include doctors, nurses, other medical personnel, nursing home staff, social workers, government employees and bank or credit union officers or employees. The standard to be followed is that if such a person has knowledge or reasonable cause to suspect that there has been neglect, abuse or exploitation of a vulnerable adult, then they must report it immediately.

Reports are made to Florida’s central elder abuse hotline at 1-800-962-2873.

Despite this requirement, one cannot rely on others to report abuse or neglect. If you suspect your loved one is being abused, you need to take action. If harm has already occurred, a nursing home abuse and neglect lawsuit may be appropriate. Call Joyce & Reyes for a free consultation.
