Can I change lawyers in my car accident case?

Clients have the right to discharge their private attorney, with or without cause, at any time throughout the course of a car accident case. You may switch attorneys because of disagreements about how the case should be handled or because of personality conflicts (which can make it difficult for you and the attorney to work together). Expanded legal needs, such as a case going to trial, may also prompt you to seek other representation.

If you switch attorneys in the midst of a case, and the attorney has already made a court appearance on your behalf, that attorney is responsible for notifying the court and obtaining the court’s permission for the change. At other points in the process, the old and new lawyers will handle the necessary notifications between the two of them.

Whenever a change is made, it is important to have a new attorney lined up so that the case can continue as seamlessly as possible.
